About the Book
In Assam, especially in backward districts like Bongaigaon, it is often said that women lag behind men in development. Historically marginalized, women are now increasingly active in social, economic, and political spheres. Despite traditional patriarchal structures, they are asserting their roles in areas like sports, literature, culture, and social movements.
This book “From Marginalization to Mainstream : The Power of Female Voices in Assam”, explores this transition. The research highlights social barriers such as the purdah system, superstitions, male dominance, dowry, and domestic violence, alongside the opportunities available for women’s progress. The study is divided into six chapters, using both primary and secondary data, and reveals that women in Bongaigaon—especially from SC, ST, OBC, and minority communities—remain significantly underdeveloped.
To address this, the study recommends comprehensive empowerment starting at the family level and extending to government initiatives. It emphasizes the need to critically analyze intersectional issues like caste, class, and ethnicity, which shape women’s diverse experiences. Although focused on Bongaigaon, the findings reflect the broader condition of women in Assam.
The growing role of women in Panchayati Raj Institutions and other sectors indicates a slow but steady shift from marginalization to empowerment. If this trend continues, all-round development for women is not a distant dream, but a near possibility.
