    About the Book

    The major objective of the present book titled Agriculture, Macroeconomy and Development in India is to focus on the development issue of the Indian economy with special emphasis on agriculture, macroeconomics, trade and development.     About the Editors

    Professor Biswajit Chatterjee (b. 3.3.1954) is a leading development economist of the country. He is a Retired Professor of Economics, at Jadavpur University, was the Head of the Department of Economics, at Jadavpur University, and was the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Jadavpur University, Kolkata from April 1, 2002 to 31.3.2010. The major areas of his teaching and research were: Macroeconomic Theory, International Trade Theory and Policy, Balance of Payments, Development Economics and Indian Economic Development and Policies. He also taught at, Presidency College, Calcutta, Kalyani University before 1984 and he was Visiting Faculty at the Department of Economics, the University of Calcutta and the Rabindra Bharati University and Visiting Professor, CRRID, Chandigarh from June 2010 to June 2014. He has published regularly in national and international journals of repute, contributed to edited volumes and has published 8 books and 14 edited volumes on different branches of development economics. Professor Chatterjee also delivered lectures at various conferences throughout the globe. He was a consultant to the World Bank, UNDP and the Planning Commission. Professor Chatterjee had the distinction of serving and leading various prestigious professional bodies of economics in the country. He was the President of The Indian Econometric Society for two consecutive years, 2011 and 2012, President Indian Society of Labour Economics, 2014, besides being the President of the Bengal Economic Association for the period April 2005 to March 2014, and again from February 2017 to till date. He was also associated with various prestigious academic bodies in India in respect of the promotion of social science research & education in the country.

    Dr. Asim K. Karmakar (b. 03.01.1956) is currently an Assistant Professor in Economics, School of Professional Studies, Netaji Subhash Open University, Kalyani, West Bengal (Formerly Assistant Professor Department of Economics, Jadavpur University, Kolkata). He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Economics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He is presently the Executive Member of the IEA) and formerly the EC member of TIES; formerly the Managing Editor (2011-2014) of Artha Beekshan. Of late, he is the managing editor of Artha Beekshan (2020-23) He has completed four minor research projects sponsored by the CAS, Jadavpur University and the UGC. He has written several co-edited and edited books published by Springer as well as research articles published by Springer, IGI Global, Emerald and Palgrave Macmillan, ROGE, Oxford. U.K. He delivered lectures at home and abroad including in Bejing, Mexico, Oxford University and UNO. He has contributed more than 120 research papers (out of which 40 papers are Scopus Indexing) in reputed journals at home and abroad, and written books on different fields of economics. Titles include Balance of Payments Theory and Policy: The Indian Experience, Capital Account Convertibility in India (Co-edited), Analytical Issues in Trade, Development and Finance (Co-edited), Rural Livelihoods in India (Co-edited) et al. Dr. Karmakar has co-authored 10 text books including B.Com. (Hons.), B.A. Hons. (Macroeconomics under New UGC Syllabus). Over and above he has received two national and four international academic awards for his outstanding contribution to the field of Economics.
